Is there anything better than a child finding a character that they love, or a world they are bewitched by, and voraciously gobbling up all of the books in the series? I expect we all know a Harry Potter fan who waited up all night for the release of each new book? Or a child who has read every ‘Wimpy Kid’ book from cover to cover three times AND seen the films?
I know people sometimes worry about their children reading books that are perhaps not quite challenging enough but sometimes it is the Jeff Kinneys of this world who are actually responsible for cementing a childhood love of reading. The humour, the illustrations, the words per page, the fun adventures all serve to build confidence and help a child fall in love with books. Sometimes it is the reverse and we can be unsure whether a book is really suitable for our child. For my youngest daughter, it was Jacqueline Wilson, and at just age 7, I found her devouring the likes of Tracey Beaker and many other of Wilson’s sometimes ‘challengingly’ themed books, but she really loves reading as a result.
So, if our children find some books that they love, one of our biggest challenges is what to read next after they’ve finished a much-loved series. What comes after the lull, for this is the age here at Barrow Hills when we really have the opportunity to encourage reading for pleasure and foster that lifelong love of reading.
