Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

A full week, including an Autumn Concert, the U11 IAPS Hockey Tournament, netball and rugby fixtures, and educational visits to the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A delight, as well, to have key staff working with our research partners at Surrey and Royal Holloway Universities again today, pushing forwards on academic standards and innovation.

Tonight we start shifting chapel pews and classroom tables to make way for our inaugural Barrow Hills Christmas Market, taking place tomorrow from 11am–4pm. We have around 40 local artisans and creatives joining us. I can also confirm plentiful gin and even barrels of beer to help begin our celebratory season of events over the next two weeks.

We shall, of course, carry on working hard and teachers will be expecting me, clipboard in hand, doing lesson observations next week. Having fun and learning go well together. We aim to stay on purpose and finish the term on a high.

We can also look forward to a Christingle Service next Monday and a Nativity and Shakespeare in Love production next Thursday.

Please do bring your friends and family to our fair tomorrow. We hope to see you there!

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It may only be the end of November but it’s starting to look a  lot like Christmas here! Our Christmas tree went up in reception earlier this week and the Year 8 children really enjoyed decorating the tree in the Refectory.

There is much learning to fit in before the end of term, however, and the children in Year 7 and Year 8 have remained focused and engaged throughout this week.

Year 8 children, plus Hermione and Bertie, have continued to rehearse for our Year 8 production of Shakespeare in Love next week.  Please join us on Thursday evening at 7pm when we transform our school hall into the Rose Playhouse.  The children have worked really hard and it promises to be a very entertaining evening.

The children in Upper Prep also enjoyed a trip to the Science Museum on Friday.  I was delighted with their responsible behaviour and it was lovely to see their enthusiasm as they looked at all the exhibits.

Have a lovely weekend,

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

Earlier in the week, we enjoyed a truly wonderful Autumn Concert, where children from across the Prep Department took to the stage with confidence and a real love of performance. It was a pleasure to see how much progress they have made and how willing they were to share their music with an appreciative audience. Well done to all involved, and thank you to our music staff for their hard work in preparing the children so beautifully.

On Wednesday, our U11 girls represented the school at the IAPS Hockey Tournament, demonstrating determination, skill, and excellent teamwork. They should be incredibly proud of their efforts and the spirit with which they approached the competition.

Today, Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the V&A Museum in London, exploring art, design, and creativity through the ages. The children asked thoughtful questions and thoroughly enjoyed their day out.

Next week promises to be another special one as we begin with our Christingle Service on Monday at 8:35am. Parents are warmly invited to join us for this cherished moment in the lead-up to Christmas.

Important upcoming dates to note are:

Saturday 29th November: Christmas Market 11am – 4pm

Monday 1st December: Christingle Service for Reception to Year 6 at 8:35am in Chapel

Tuesday 9th December: Carol Service, 7pm – 8pm, with refreshments from 6:15pm

Thursday 11th December: Christmas jumper day

Friday 12th December: End of term, 12pm school closes

Wishing you all a restful weekend, and I look forward to seeing many of you at tomorrow’s Christmas Market.

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

A beautiful aroma of lavender embraced Pre-Prep this week as classes welcomed Mr Gaszka with his baskets of lavender. Under Mr Gaszka’s direction, the children made special potpourri pouches to take home at the end of term. The lavender certainly left a comforting trace of calm for the rest of the morning.

Year 1 were continuing to work hard in literacy lessons this week, incorporating the features of instruction writing as they described the steps involved when they made their Christmas angels out of clay. The children managed to use a range of time conjunctions and imperative (bossy) verbs. Very impressive.

The Larks treated us to a real treat on Tuesday afternoon when they performed at the Autumn Concert. Well done to all of the Year 1 and Year 2 children involved. The Larks is open to Reception children from the summer term.

School Council met this week to discuss new ideas and suggestions from each class’s suggestion box. Evie (Rec), Indy (Year 1) and Holly (Year 2) who were each elected by their peers to represent their class, shared recent discussions from their class and new ideas for internal clubs…watch this space.

Tomorrow is, of course, our Christmas Market: 11am – 4pm here at school. It’s the beginning of a busy couple of weeks of festive calendar events so here is a summary of what’s to come in the week ahead:

Saturday 29th November: Christmas Market 11am – 4pm

Monday 1st December: Christingle Service for Reception to Year 6 at 8:35am in Chapel

Monday 1st December: Pre-Prep Christmas Post Opens. Don’t forget to include the name and class of the recipient

Tuesday 2nd December: Nativity Dress Rehearsal at 9am (strictly only for those with young children)

Thursday 4th December: Nativity Performance at 9am (Refreshments from 8:15am)

Have a great weekend,
Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep
