Message From the Head
Dear Parents,
A great week for body and mind at Barrow Hills.
World Book Week provided so many fun events including author visits, “Drop and Read” sessions and, with your kind support, the always much anticipated dress-up day. In Pre-Prep, thanks to strong parent partnership, we have seen a cumulative total of over 24 hours of reading at home each week. All the children, up to Year 8, also enjoy a weekly focussed library session. This, alongside quality provision such as the drama curriculum, helps literacy really come alive. In 2025 we saw 100% of our children finishing Reception reach (or even exceed!) the national Early Learning Goals in comprehension, word reading and writing. In 2026, using externally validated assessment, we know that 90% of Barrow Hills children are at, or above, national standards for reading, with 42% working at “greater depth”.
Fantastic efforts all round with the key message to keep reading!
On the sports field, both our U11 and U13 hockey teams took part in the IAPS Hockey Competition at Eastbourne College. Overall it was a great day. We were largely undefeated in the pool stages before making it all the way to the quarter-finals.
Year 8 provided a sports report in assembly where we heard of the team’s eagerness being likened to a “pack of caffeinated wolves”, playing with “heart, soul and sweat”. Special mentions went to Alfie, “the dog whisperer”, Reuben, “the human wall”, and Philip, “master of psychological warfare”.
One could ask for nothing more, either from books or the sports field.
We hope parents enjoyed our “open classrooms” today. Next week is STEM Week, with many fun events planned which promise to engage and inspire our young learners.
Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head
