In Reception this week, we have been thinking about doubling and halving. The children loved listening to the traditional Chinese tale ‘Two of Everything’ in which an elderly couple dig up a magic pot in their garden. The Haktaks discover to their delight that the pot doubles anything put in it, and they become immensely rich by using the pot to double the coins in their purse. Things take a turn for the worse however, when Mrs Haktak accidentally falls into the pot and out come TWO Mrs Haktaks…!
We explored the concept of doubling and halving in maths, using fingers, fruit, and numberblocks (‘double trouble’). The children really enjoyed an art and craft activity, making ladybirds using card and split pins. They halved a circle of red card to make two wings and decided on a number of spots to draw on one of the wings. They carefully coloured in the same number of spots on the other wing and wrote the total number on their ladybird.
Well done Reception!
