Futures & DestinationsConsistently excellent outcomes

We are delighted to be able to send our children on to a broad dynamic range of high-achieving, well-considered and happy schools after their time with us at Barrow Hills. We know our children very well, and work very closely with parents to identify the ‘best fit’ school for their child’s future.

We ensure that every child is very well prepared for a bright future and we are dedicated to ensuring a smooth and successful  transition to independent senior schools at 11+ or 13+.

Over the past three years, our most popular destinations have included King Edward’s School Witley, Churcher’s College, St Catherine’s School Bramley, Portsmouth Grammar School, Seaford College, Charterhouse, Cranleigh, and the Royal Grammar School.

For families aspiring to King Edward’s Witley, part of the Royal Bridewell Hospital to which Barrow Hills belongs, our Assured Places Programme ensures a seamless pathway all the way through to ‘A level’s.

We ensure a strong foundation for the journey ahead through rigorous delivery of core subjects, particularly English and Maths. Our broad and deep curriculum also allows children to thrive in areas such as sport, music, art, and design technology.

In 2024, 46% of our students achieved a grade A or A* in their ISEB exams.

We prepare students thoroughly for examinations, combining thinking skills with verbal and non-verbal reasoning practice. Mock exams and detailed feedback provide students with a clear understanding of their progress and areas for improvement. Our online learning platforms and integration of technology effectively support both in-school and at-home preparation. Parents receive constructive formal feedback on a half-termly basis. Sure and steady.

Our Head and Senior Team work closely with children to prepare them for senior school interviews, ensuring a confident and calm approach. Over the past three years, every child has successfully gained a place at a school of their choice.

Scholarships

For many of our children, the additional challenge of pursuing a scholarship at 11+ or 13+ provides opportunity to extend their studies and further develop their passions.

We pride ourselves on knowing our children well, identifying their potential, and encouraging them to excel further. For example:

  • Sports Scholars benefit from extra tuition with our coaches, receive nutrition advice, and develop leadership skills by mentoring younger children during lessons and tournaments.
  • Drama Scholars participate in after-school clubs, attend workshops with professional directors and theatre companies, and enjoy additional theatre visits. They are also supported in preparing for auditions with casting agencies for film and theatre.
  • Art Scholars learn to build a portfolio of work, conduct research on various artists, and experiment with a wide range of media.

50% of our leavers gained senior school scholarships and awards in 2024

Over the last three years, our students have achieved 46 scholarships and awards from prestigious independent senior schools, including King Edward’s Witley, Charterhouse, Churcher’s College, Royal Grammar School Guildford, Seaford College, Ampleforth, and Prior’s Field. Most scholarships were awarded in Academics (33%) and Sports (40%), followed by Drama and Music.

“Our son tells us that in all the subjects so far, he has previously covered the material in Barrow Hills and sometimes in more depth (science and maths). Clearly this is not a recap, as some of his classmates are encountering the material for the first time. It has meant that he can throw himself into extracurricular activities (rowing, rock climbing, rock school and jazz band!) and meet new friends rather than focus on academically keeping up. It is important as it helps build confidence in a much larger school and a new environment….. It is a Barrow Hills’ secret sauce!”
“As a child who has to work extra hard at academics, he has entered his new school at Year 9 pleasantly surprised at the level of his knowledge, confident in his position in his classes and able to consolidate much of his learning. In addition, he has taken the transition in his stride, longer days, independence and a new environment have landed with him positively in all cases. He knows how to prioritise his work alongside his extra-curricular activities and is ready to engage in the senior school offering."

Upper Prep Co-Curricular

Our co-curricular activities play a vital part in developing a variety of attributes in our children, and passions are often discovered that children take with them to their senior school and beyond.
