Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

The Summer Proms, blessed with a sunny Friday evening, was a great success — perhaps that timing is something to consider for next year’s calendar. It was a wonderful celebration of the children’s efforts, showcasing impressive levels of dance, song, and musicianship. Thanks so much for joining us, I know the children really loved performing for families, guests and their peers.

Last week, we enjoyed a fantastic performance of Porridge from Years 3 and 4, delivered with great energy and enthusiasm. This week, Year 7 will take to the stage with their production of Googlebox.

We’re now looking forward to Sports Day on Friday — no doubt a wonderful end to a great week. To enable us to include some photos from Sports Day, your final Bulletin of the academic year will be published next Monday (June 30th)

Best regards,

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

What an action-packed and inspiring week it’s been in Upper Prep!

We kicked things off with two captivating career talks. Mark Todd shared his expertise in forestry, sawmilling and timber work—bringing the great outdoors into the classroom—while Jo Kirkland offered a glimpse into the exciting world of acting. The children were gripped by the contrast between these two fascinating professions and were full of questions. A particular highlight? Holding a real (and very heavy!) chainsaw, and watching Jo’s childhood appearance on The Benny Hill Show—a clip that recently went viral on TikTok! Huge thanks to both parents for generously sharing their time and experiences. The children—and the staff—were absolutely enthralled.

A big shoutout to George, Hugo, Fletcher and Toby, who supported Mrs James, Mrs Wallace and Mr O’Kelly backstage during the Year 3 and 4 production of Porridge. Your set-moving skills and calm professionalism helped the show run like clockwork—thank you!

Year 7 have been busy submitting their applications for next year’s Captains’ roles. Mr Crisell and I have been so impressed with the thought, ambition and maturity in their writing. Mr Towers and I are very much looking forward to interviewing them next week!

Meanwhile, Year 8 have been making the most of their Post Common Entrance programme with an exciting variety of activities. Tuesday’s adventure, ‘The Drop’, tested their teamwork and map-reading abilities—and they rose to the challenge brilliantly. On Thursday, they joined Mr O’Kelly and me for a trip to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford to see The Croft—a chilling and atmospheric tale set on a remote Scottish island. Before the curtain rose, we enjoyed a lively meal at Pizza Express. On Friday, it was back to school (and into the pool!) to design, build and test submarines—an engineering challenge they tackled with impressive creativity and enthusiasm. A huge thank you to all the staff who organised these activities.

On Friday the children wore their own clothes to raise funds for Meath Epilepsy Charity, based in Godalming. The day ended on a high with our annual Proms in the Park. A special congratulations to Delilah and George, our Drama Captains, for hosting the evening with flair and confidence. Every act was a joy to watch—well done to everyone who took part.

Warmest wishes,

Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

P.S. Don’t forget! The postponed Year 7 show will now take place on Tuesday at 7pm, with drinks in the refectory from 6:30pm. I look forward to seeing many of you there!

News from Prep

Well, what a treat we all had last week with the Year 3 and 4 production of the hilarious musical “Porridge”! The children sang, danced, and acted with a confidence and maturity that belied their age. Taking to the stage in front of a very large audience can be a daunting experience – well done to all of them for taking it all in their stride and delivering a stellar performance which thoroughly entertained!

Performing seems to have been the buzz word of the Prep department last week,. LAMDA exams took place on Thursday, with both solo and ensemble performances. Well done to those who took part. On Saturday, Miss Anna presided over the most recent set of ballet exams, with children dancing across ages groups to pass a wide range of Grades, including Primary, Grade One, Grade Two and Grade Four – well done all of you, I’m looking forward to hearing how it all went!

Proms in the Park was a lovely way to end the week – the sun shone and the children dazzled on the stage. This is such a lovely event as, for so many of the acts, it is the children who make the decision to perform, choosing what they do and how it is presented. I know it was an evening enjoyed by so many of the Barrow Hills families – thank you to everyone who came along to support the children, and a thank you to all the children for a fabulous evening’s entertainment!

News from Pre-Prep

The hot weather really brought Year 1’s Beach Day to life for them on Thursday. The children arrived at school dressed in quite a spectrum of colour and were found lounging on inflatable rings and lilos for their early morning reading. Year 1 have been exploring Islands and Coasts this term. With geography underpinning this topic, the children have been learning about the physical and human features of our coastlines, and also using this topic to write about a walk at the seaside, describing their senses as they did so, and creating a poster highlighting the importance of saving our oceans from pollution. I have just enjoyed cooling off in the garden with Year 1 as we enjoyed a paddle and building sandcastles. The ice lollies at lunch time were a welcome relief in these scorching temperatures. There’s no doubt that today, as with all of our themed days in Pre-Prep, will have enthused and motivated the children to write about, as well as talk about, the day, not to mention creating an unforgettable day at school for them.

Our Early Years classes thoroughly enjoyed their Teddy Bears Picnic on Thursday morning. Nursery, Kindy and Reception children spent time with one another in smaller groups and took part in parachute games, face painting and they went on a bear hunt, just as they did in the popular book, ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’. It was lovely to see so many different special cuddly toys at school, as well as many teddy bears. The picnic itself took place on the outdoor stage which was perfectly shaded by the woodland backdrop by lunchtime.

Congratulations to those who received Work of the Week certificates in assembly this morning. Annabelle (Rec), Sammy (Year 1) and Lenny (Year 2) were all presented with their certificates. Well done, too, to Arthur (Year 1) who achieved his Gold Award. Excellent effort, all of you.

Monday is Move Up morning for the children who will all spend time with their new teachers for September. This is always a lovely transition activity for the children and for the adults as they ready themselves for their new chapters after the summer. This, and other preparatory activities in the final couple of weeks of term, ensure a smooth and positive experience for all, particularly as we recognise some children may find transitions more challenging than others. A busy week of events continues on Monday afternoon as Year 1 and Year 2 travel to Pennthorpe School for a cricket fixture. Parents are very welcome to come along and cheer us on. The weather is forecast to be very warm so please ensure your child has sunscreen, a hat, water bottle and shorts on. Thursday morning is our annual Pre-Prep Summer Celebration at 8:45am, and then Sports Day is on Friday, starting at 9am. Refreshments will be served before both events on the terrace. We look forward to see you.
