I was recently challenged by a friend on Facebook, one of those circulating chain letter type posts which I usually ignore, to post the most memorable books I have read, one per day, for a week and to challenge another friend to do the same each day. The idea is just to post a picture of the book without explanation or background.
Initially my inclination was to delete and move on but then it occurred to me that this is actually a perfect way to discover a whole new wealth of recommended books by people I know and respect, to add to my Kindle library – a five minute challenge for me, in return for hours of reading bliss. I couldn’t resist the idea of passing on a few little gems of my own either! Who doesn’t love the feeling of recommending a book that you are later told someone else has loved too?
So, in no particular order, here are the first books that came into my mind …
‘The Silver Sword’ by Ian Serraillier
‘The Secret Island’ by Enid Blyton
‘Sarum’ by Edward Rutherford
‘All the Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr
‘The History of Bees’ by Maja Lunde
‘Fair Stood the Wind for France’ by H E Bates
‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ by Amor Towles
My challenge to you and your children is to write a similar list of your own, just on a slip of paper maybe, and pass it to someone you know, then ask them to do the same, and let’s see how far the Barrow Hills Good Read Challenge can go…
If you would like to add any of your favourite book choices to our library, please do let me know via lje@barrowhills.org and I can add them to our new Amazon Wish List. Alternatively, if you would like to buy anything from our Amazon Wishlist, the School would be very grateful to receive it. Here is the link, it is named Barrow Hills Library Wishlist http://amzn.eu/bwq08ZG.
