Many thanks to all those who came BACK TO SCHOOL for the 2023 Quiz Night. Mr and Mrs Perkins transformed the Refectory to such an extent that the evening started on the right vibe – we were thrown back to the days of our youth, with 80s and 90s memorabilia, music and snacks. True to our teenage days, the bar did a roaring trade and by the music round, if felt more like a party than a quiz night.
The questions were themed on the curriculum of our school days, the 80s and 90s, and Barrow Hills. Did you know that Barrow Hills is closer to Bognor Regis than Buckingham Palace? And that you drive fewer miles from school to Godalming Borough Hall than to Haslemere Town Hall?
The first question of the quiz was a Shakespeare quote and everyone knew the play. The last question of the first round was another Shakespeare quote and no-one knew the play: ‘A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.’ That was a subtle message to everyone because the real success of the evening was always going to be getting together and having fun.
Many thanks to Mr Crisell for keeping order as Quiz Master; we are hoping his return to the role is a permanent return of an old Barrow Hills tradition. Many thanks also to our bartenders, markers and those who kindly stayed behind after class to help tidy up. Many thanks to Simon from Milford Station’s Zoo Café who cooked pizza on site for us all for a reduced fee. Please do drop in and treat yourself to a Friday night pizza soon.
Quiz Winners:
‘Quizzy Rascals’: Mr and Mrs Green, Holt and Fish. We really hope they will wear their rosettes with pride.
Other teams to commend:
– ‘Simple Minds’ (the staff team) got full marks in the tricky history round (the questions posed by Year 7 being particularly challenging). They were the only team to know that the first thousand-bomber raid in 1942 was launched on Cologne.
– ‘The Glitch and the Matrix’ were the only other team to get 10 out of 10 in an academic round, with full marks for the maths paper. They also got the most number of correct answers (more than the winners) but just missed the top spot due to the MULTIPLIER.
– ‘Smells Like Kindy Spirit’ got all 10 artists in the music round for full marks, and were able to identify all 15 artists played. They were not alone – six teams got 10 out of 10 for their knowledge of music released between 1985 and 2000, from James to Chimbawamba to Right Said Fred.
But the real winners of the night were the TV producers of our youth. In the Picture Round, everyone knew Rab C Nesbitt, ‘To The Manor Born’, ‘Blind Date’, Michael Knight, Trevor MacDonald and Lisa Simpson.
