Last year I wrote about Black History Month with a literary twist, by focusing on the amazing Maya Angelou, perhaps best known for her 1969 memoir, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’, which made literary history as the first non-fiction bestseller by an African American woman.
This year I wanted to point you in the direction of some of the fabulous books by Malorie Blackman OBE. Blackman was born 8 February 1962 in Clapham in London. Her parents were both from Barbados.
She is a British writer who held the position of Children’s Laureate from 2013 to 2015. She primarily writes literature and television drama for children and young adults, and uses science fiction to explore social and ethical issues, and many of her books use the setting of a fictional dystopia to explore racism.
We have a large selection of her books available in the prep library which are suitable for most level of reader, including some Barrington Stoke, dyslexia friendly titles.
