Year 2 had another busy week and they have all been working really hard. In maths we began looking at using a bar model to show an addition or subtraction and understanding the part whole model. We began using cubes, being able to count the amount needed to show the bar model. The children then explored how we would show this with larger numbers such as 324 add 238 as we could not get 562 cubes out! The class had to work out how to find the missing number on the bar model and then use their column addition or subtraction to work out the answer. Year 2 worked really hard on this and then began using the bar models in word problems.
In art we explored Claude Monet and the style of painting he created, using short, quick brushstrokes. We looked at his paintings of London and tried to create our own using this style. The children were very focused on creating their own impressionist piece of art.
In our topic we continue to learn about the Great Fire of London, exploring the reasons why the fire spread so quickly. In small groups, the children had a chance to re-enact the events surrounding the fire using key characters such as Charles II, Samuel Pepys and Thomas Farrier.
In grammar we explored the homophones sea, see, here, hear, to, two and too. We took this grammar lesson outside, to use homophones to describe the world around us. The children then used chalk to write a sentence using the homophone in the correct context.
There has been so much brilliant learning this week. Mrs Holmes, Mrs Livingston and Mrs Platt are all super proud of the children.
