I hope you are looking forward to a half term of reading – I know I am – I have a big pile of books at the ready!
The children met with the Usborne rep this week at assembly and I hope everyone is excited to take part in the sponsored read this half term. Please see your Portal notification for all the details. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve our book provision with the added benefit that we can all focus on reading.
I hope you have time to share a story, read aloud (you are never too young or old to be read too!) or just sit on the sofa and quietly read together. I understand this is easier said than done but here are my tips. Remember that even a short read every day builds great skills.
Make time for reading – not just at bedtime, why not try five minutes of reading before using any device, bribery can work!
Read anything – a cook book when helping in the kitchen, street signs on a road trip etc.
Read the same book – particularly effective for Year 3 upwards – it can become a competition of who has read the most and offers opportunities to share ideas about the characters and plot. I find it fascinating and very relaxing reading children’s literature and it often gives me great insight into what my daughters are interested in.
Visit your local library and become a member or join online – when you join you also get access to their digital portal which gives you access to magazines and digital books.
Start the conversation with your friends and family about what they are reading – often a space to talk about books can be inspiring for a child, they may often want to read the book their cousin/friend/godmother has recommended.
I hope you have a restful half term and I look forward to hearing about all the books your children have read. Please contact me as always on jed@barrowhills.org with any questions.
