Most of you probably already know that the first Harry Potter book, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, was published by Bloomsbury in 1997 to immediate popular and critical acclaim. Six further best-selling books in the series, along with spin-off books, films, theatre productions and a multitude of merchandise have since followed. The Harry Potter books have been translated into over 80 languages, won multiple awards, and sold more than 500 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling book series in history. So now all we need to do is to encourage our children to actually read them!
As part of our World Book Day celebrations in school this year we asked for donations of books, including the full set of Harry Potter books. These are now in the library just itching to be read! And if you think you are a bit of a Harry Potter fan, try your hand at some of these quizzes!
Interestingly, Harry Potter has become such a phenomenon in his own right that every year, on 2nd May, people all over the world honour Rowling’s book series by celebrating International Harry Potter Day. The tradition actually began in the UK in 2012 when British Prime Minister David Cameron officially designated the day.
