In science this week, Year 3 have continued their ‘How Plants Grow’ topic and were lucky enough to enrich this learning with a trip to the school greenhouse and veggie patches. They pulled rhubarb with Mr Gaszka and presented it to the catering team so they could make yummy rhubarb dishes. At lunch on Friday, there was: rhubarb, ginger and lemon cordial, rhubarb cake and rhubarb, spinach and goats cheese salad. Absolutely delicious!
Mrs Peek encouraged the children try the different varieties of rhubarb raw! They tried it without adding anything and most of them thought it was disgusting! However, they were also allowed to dip it in sugar and then it was much tastier!
Year 3 then moved on to planting strawberry plants outside the Thomas Moor Centre. They are now responsible for watering them every day so they get big juicy strawberries! The children cannot wait to try them. Surely they will be much tastier than the ‘yucky’ raw rhubarb!
The Great Sunflower Race has begun too. They all measured their seedlings and were amazed at how much they had grown. They have recorded results, drawn a diagram and noted down any observations. They can still be seen if you walk past the science block as they love the warm sunny window ledge.
Finally, the catering theme this week has been all about food sustainability and waste. All the year groups were asked to guess the ingredients in some delicious bhajis prepared by the catering team. They did in fact contain those parts of vegetables that may not traditionally be eaten: cauliflower leaves, broccoli stalks and carrot peelings. The class that got the closest was 3G. Congratulations to them all, especially Phoebe who identified vegetable stalks. Mrs Barraud delivered the winners some delicious brownies to enjoy.
