Reception continued to learn about ‘celebrations’ this week, with Diwali as their topic. Abhi did a wonderful show and tell about the ‘Festival of Lights’. The children explored all the traditional things families do together, including wearing colourful clothes and sharing wonderful food.
They learnt that patterns are created at the front of houses to welcome the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi. These are called rangoli and Reception children made their own versions using cut out tissue paper shapes and golden cupcake holders. They looked at how flowers and exotic birds usually form the inspiration for the beautiful symmetrical patterns.
The children also started to make their own diya lamps and looked at henna or mehndi drawing and made impression patterns in soft clay. They then cut out their handprints, painted them bright colours and will finish with varnish, some glitter and a flickering tealight.
