We think the Reception children are amazing all the time, but this week we have been encouraging them to recognize their own talents, goals and aspirations, to tie in with Sir Chris Hoy’s ‘Be Amazing’ initiative.
Each day we have focussed on a different aspect – being positive, dreaming big, believing in yourself, the importance of giving and staying healthy and fit. For the first activity, the children designed medals acknowledging something they are good at. Sir Chris states the need to break free of limitations and set ambitious targets for ourselves. So the children were asked to suspend reality and imagine what they would be if they could be anything! The resulting ‘big dreams’ were inspiring and included super fast runners, artists, astronauts, a mermaid, a spy, a cheetah, the fastest runner in the whole entire world and a detective solving mysteries! No limitations in evidence here!
Mrs Harris set the children a challenge, to fill an empty pot with words that describe their talents and qualities, and see if a beautiful flower would blossom. They were rightly proud of their creations and the attributes they had selected. It really has been an ‘amazing’ and uplifting exercise!
Of course, we have still been working on our literacy and sounds and have been exploring shapes in maths. To round off the week, we celebrated the Lunar New Year with a day of Chinese themed crafts and projects. It has been a packed half term of learning and we want to pass on our heartfelt thanks to parents, grandparents and nannies for all their support and commitment at kitchen tables, day after day! It is definitely time for powering down the screens and powering up the rest, family time and play! Gong Xi Fa Cai!
