On Wednesday afternoon, (aka Woden’s Day!) Year 3 were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Dean who delivered an exciting and interactive talk all about the Anglo-Saxons to complement their latest history topic. Woden was one of the principal gods in Norse mythology an earlier form of Odin; war-god and the protector of heroes. Fallen warriors joined him in Valhalla, he was a great magician associated with runes god of poets. However, not everyone agreed he was divine and Woden is often depicted as the ancestor of the Anglo-Saxon Kings.
The children were shown many real Saxon artefacts that Mr Dean has actually discovered with his own metal detector; as well as a Saxon sword, a lyre, a helmet and many books linked to their topic. They were enthralled!
Mr Dean told the children stories about the Saxon Kings of England and the lives they led. He showed them how to play the lyre and some even had a go themselves.
The highlight of the visit was, of course, when Mr Dean demonstrated the sharpness of his Saxon sword by chopping a banana in half!
