The library CHALLENGE this summer is designed to encourage children across the school to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the holidays, providing lots of fun, as well as helping to prevent the annual summer reading ‘dip’.
Summer reading is critical for children to retain knowledge and skills learned in the previous school year. Those who don’t read are at a very real risk of falling behind their classmates but this can be avoided by making sure your children take time to read regularly.
All children at Barrow Hills should be reading for 20 minutes minimum per day, with the older children in the school in Year 5 and above, aiming for 30-60 minutes per day. For those in Year 8, who are heading off to senior schools in September, where the texts will become even more demanding as they approach their GCSEs, this is particularly important.
We are hoping to motivate every child to keep reading to build their skills and confidence, ready for a challenging new school year in September by completing this Summer Bingo Sheet. There will be prizes for completing a line, a column or the whole thing.
Please do send me any fun photos of your child completing the bingo to lje@barrowhills.org, or contact me on the same email for reading age appropriate book recommendations.
