“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”
Alfred Wainwright
We struggled to predict the ever changing weather last week, in fact it changed mid lesson on several occasions! We ended up with a combination of a couple of themes for this week in Forest School; ‘sun awareness’ and ‘walking for wellbeing’. We chose depending on the weather!
Sun Awareness involves reminding the children how to protect themselves and stay safe in the sun.
Sunshine = sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream. Also, stay hydrated and find some shade! I brought my new frog sun hat to show the children and we played a ‘sun hat’ relay game with it!
We made pictures to represent the sun using things found on the woodland floor. Pine cones make excellent sunrays! Some of the children were surprised to learn that the sun is in fact a star! Nursery children used their imagination as they climbed upon a giant elephant, banging his trunk and singing “the sun has got his hat on…”.
May is National Walking Month. It is, I don’t make these things up! So when the weather wasn’t quite right to be discussing ‘sun awareness’, we went for a walk in the wet and the puddles, to improve our wellbeing. We had a lovely time chatting, pointing out different things in nature, while topping up our vitamin D levels between showers.
Eagle eyed Mrs Reed spotted a fox crossing a large field through the trees. We were able to stop and watch it meandering as we tried to guess what it was up to.
It doesn’t matter what the weather is, the children just love being outside in the fresh air!
