The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day. On Monday, Pre-Prep spent time looking at what a habitat is and what it needs to provide. Everyone agreed that our house provides shelter, the roof over our head stops the weather from getting us too wet, too cold or too hot. The fridge, the cupboards and the pantry provide us with food and the tap gives us fresh water to drink. These are the basic requirements of any type of habitat: shelter, food and water.
Older children went on to discuss the need for space; to lessen the competition for food and water and were able to recognise that the shelter provides protection from predators. We also discussed the different types of habitat, according to which type of creature you are looking for; a cow on a farm or a whale in the sea.
All were challenged to build a habitat suitable for a hedgehog that would provide for its basic needs. I’m sure you’ll agree, from the pictures, that we are looking at future environmentalists and architects!
Amazing creativity, communication and team work, well done Pre-Prep.
