First launched in 2013, World Nursery Rhyme Week (WNRW) promotes the importance of singing and reciting nursery rhymes in early childhood development and education, focussing on the social, physical and emotional skills that learning nursery rhymes during this formative time brings – plus they are so much fun!
The Grand Barrow Hills Library Plan 2020, was to run a full programme of events in line with WNRW for Pre-Prep children but sadly the need to maintain the bubbles has meant we have had to put this idea on hold.
However, over 4 million children from 106 countries have taken part since 2013 and the initiative is open to parents too. World Nursery Rhyme Week was founded and is run by Music Bugs, and by following this link, parents are able to sign up for free activities supporting the WNRW songs of the week, which include song downloads for each of the five rhymes, videos, colouring in sheets, cutting exercises, pencil control sheets, other activity ideas and even a nursery rhyme quiz.
Each year, five rhymes are chosen to be celebrated specifically and children are encouraged to take part in the ‘Rhyme a Day’ challenge by singing the nursery rhymes and taking part in the supporting activities.
The rhymes for November 2020 are:
Monday 16th – Wheels On The Bus
Tuesday 17th – Five Little Speckled Frogs
Wednesday 18th – Hickory Dickory Dock
Thursday 19th – Old MacDonald Had A Farm
Friday 20th – Miss Polly Had A Dolly
