Mr Mullins and Mr Griotek our amazing Barrow Hills maintenance team invited us to come and look at the rocks, both natural and man made that they were using as temporary repair materials to fill the potholes that keep appearing on the back drive. They discussed the two types of bricks and asked the children what they were made of. Aria confidently answered ‘clay’. Luke correctly named the ‘sledge hammer’ and Tobias knew what a manhole was! After a tantalising session to handle the tools that “sensationally smashed” the bricks – we walked to the perilous area of the potholes. The children in 3R examined the damage caused by the ongoing wet weather and then took advantage of the first rays of relatively warm sunshine to sit on nearby benches. Here they discussed with their partners how natural and made made materials including stone was a good resource to use for this job. Then it was back indoors to continue with definitions of permeable, porous and sedimentary rocks. Such a fascinating topic to explore.
Oh, and by the way, no, we cannot have sledge hammers in the classroom boys! Mrs Miles
