To conclude our amazing topic on Rocks, Fossils and Soils, Year 3 became investigators and palaeontologists in some exciting and very messy experiments. They embarked on ‘The Great Chocolate Chip Excavation’, ‘The Soil Sausage Investigation’ and ‘The Great Soil Shake Challenge’!
The children investigated the difference between different types of soil by creating their own sausage like shapes and recording how well their soil stuck together. The children also observed how different types of soil behave when dunked in a jar of water; what sinks, what floats and what mysteriously gets dissolved!
Finally, the children put on their palaeontology hats and embarked on a challenge to excavate chocolate chips from a cookie with just two toothpicks, drawing on their fine motor skills and being able to recognise the difficulty of the important and delicate work performed by real palaeontologists and archaeologists.
