Year 3’s adventures began with a great trip to Butser Ancient Farm where history was bought alive on this gorgeously sunny day.
We decamped into our very own Round House with a real fire. We then participated in a wide range of activities linked to our history topic of the Celts. We could have had a special picnic with foods that may have been eaten in the Iron Age but we all voted for our packed lunches instead!
We made chalk carvings and Celtic jewellery to bring home, as well as carrying out an archaeological dig. We participated in ‘clunching’ which involved crushing chalk and mixing it with mud, hay and water to build part of a wall, it was very messy but incredible fun. It was truly a wonderful opportunity to see what life would have been like in the Iron Age.

The children wrote about their experiences:
Ophelia
I really enjoyed learning how to make the bracelets. It was really cool that if I continued to create the pattern it could turn into a ring!
Eddie
My favourite part was smashing up all the chalk to make the clunch. It was amazing that we helped to build a wall!
Kit
I thought the Roman Villa was really interesting, especially the outside toilets!
Bertie
I loved going into a real round house with a fire in the middle, it was really cool!
Hugo
It is hard to pick out a favourite moment as I enjoyed everything, especially the archaeology activity!
Michelle
I enjoyed making the ‘clunch’, even though it was very very messy!
Arthur
I found the digging activity really interesting because you didn’t know what you might find.
