Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

‘Preparing for greater things’ saw Year 8 take it to the next level as they presented to dignitaries, including the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of the City of London, while attending the Bridewell Court Meeting at Guildhall. Our pupils ably showcased how they have used our own Bridewell AI to deepen their knowledge and critical thinking within the English curriculum.

We also welcomed the Surrey University Research team back this week as we continue to elevate our digital provision for 2026. We don’t have much space for a parent demonstration this term given the busy calendar, so we will provide a seminar in January should you wish to know more as we begin to cascade these advanced tools to Year 6 and Year 7.

In sport, Year 2 enjoyed their first formal football fixture with great enthusiasm despite the chilly conditions. We also have good news from one of our alumnae who recently graduated to Churcher’s College – Cleo has been selected for the England U16 hockey team.

Parent consultations for Year 5 and 6 continued this week, and last Friday we had a superb turnout for our inaugural Parents’ Association Meeting. Thank you in particular to Emma and Graeme for their sterling care and effort.

We have ballet exams this weekend and, by the time we reach the following one, we will be hosting our inaugural Barrow Hills Christmas Market on 29th November, 11am–4pm. We have over 30 local artisans and creatives joining us, along with wine, carols and more, to mark a delightful start to our Christmas season.

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has been a non-stop week of lessons, activities, sport, rehearsals and trips for the children of Upper Prep this week and I have been most impressed with their stamina and resilience.

On Tuesday, Year 8 welcomed the research team from Surrey University to explore the exciting new Bridewell AI project. The very next day, they travelled to London to present at the Bridewell Court – and they did so with confidence, clarity and real intellectual curiosity. Their focus and maturity shone through, and they represented Barrow Hills superbly alongside Mr Towers, Mr Hinds and Mr Mullins.

Meanwhile, a huge well done to Josh and Mateo in Year 8, who took part in the Cranmer Awards at Charterhouse, each delivering a Bible reading in this prestigious competition. We are very proud of their hard work.

And congratulations to Bertie and Oscar in Year 7, who travelled to Wootton Bassett over the weekend to compete in The Royal Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. This talented duo earned several medals: Bertie gained gold in the Solo Acting Class and Oscar was awarded gold in the Prepared Prose Reading class. The boys won gold in the Mime Duologue class and they were awarded silver in the Duologue Acting class.  A fantastic achievement – well done, boys!

Next week continues to be busy. Here are some dates for your diaries:

Friday November 28th:  Year 7 and Year 8 trip to The Science Museum

Tuesday December 2nd:  Dress rehearsal for Shakespeare in Love

Thursday December 4th: Shakespeare in Love 7pm

Friday December 5th: Trip to Leicester to see the Richard III Museum

Keep learning those lines please, Year 8!

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

With Christmas fast approaching, the weeks are definitely starting to run away with us once more! Week 10 of the Autumn Term was particularly busy. On Monday, children from Years 3, 4 and 5 competed at the St Edmund’s Swimming Gala. Well done to everyone who took part, I know these events require a good deal of courage and we are always so proud of the children who represent Barrow Hills. On Tuesday, the Usborne Book Fair made a welcome return, and the children enjoyed having a browse, picking up some new titles, and getting some ideas for their Christmas lists.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we held parent consultations for Years 5 and 6. Parent Consultations offer a fantastic opportunity to get a quick snapshot of where each child is, and help to ensure parents and teachers are working in tandem to provide the best possible level of support for each individual child. Thank you to everyone who came along to discuss your child’s progress.

Today, Year 5 had a fascinating trip to the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth where they learned the incredible story of Henry VIII’s favourite ship, famously sunk in battle, only to be rediscovered and raised 400 years later!

Finally, good luck to everyone taking ballet exams this weekend!

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

It really did feel like mid November this week and if the freezing temperatures on Tuesday morning didn’t make us feel as though we’d been plunged into winter, the flurry or huge snow flakes on Wednesday certainly did. The children’s focus immediately turned to the outdoors and we embraced the snow during its brief visit. There was extraordinary delight on all the faces of the children and the staff, with one of the Reception children wondering “Does this mean it’s nearly Christmas?”

With nativity rehearsals in full swing and oranges on order for making our christingles ahead of our Christingle Service on the 1st December, it really does feel festive all of a sudden here at Barrow Hills.

Yesterday afternoon Year 2 joined Mr Hinds in DT to see the 3D printers in action. The children have been tasked with designing their own London related figure such as a keyring of Big Ben perhaps, and Mr Hinds was able to show the children how their designs become a reality. Year 2 headed back to their classrooms with lots of inspiration for their designs.

It was Fred Phonics Day in Reception Class this morning and the children made a super effort to embrace this theme as they arrived dressed in shades of green and many frog accessories! As our children know, Fred helps learn to blend sounds into words. He can only speak in pure sounds, not whole words, which is called “Fred Talk”.  When they can blend sounds out loud, they are taught to “Fred in your head” by silently mouthing or thinking the sounds before saying the word, and use “Fred Fingers”, where the children hold up the number of fingers that corresponds to the number of sounds in a word, which helps them with spelling. So, as you can see, Fred plays a key role in our Reception children’s daily lives!

Congratulations to all of the Pre-Prep children who took part in their first home fixture of the year this afternoon. They played with such pride and team spirit against Amesbury and came away with smiles on their faces. Well done to you all, a very well earned match tea afterwards.

It was wonderful to welcome Kindy to Awards Assembly this morning and join the rest of their school community to celebrate the range of achievements this week. Work of the Week certificates were presented to Oliver (Rec), Hugo (Year 1) and Arthur (Year 2) for super work which included fantastic handwriting, use of sounds knowledge in creative writing, and accuracy of recordings during investigations in Science. We awarded Bronze Awards to Freddie, Toto and Josh (Reception), and also our very first Silver Awards of the year to Luca, Ariella and Annabelle (Year 1). Very well done to each of you.

It’s only 8 days until our Christmas Market, which we are hugely excited for. This takes place on Saturday 29th November here at school from 11am – 4pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Have a wonderful weekend – stay warm.

Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep
