On Monday, I spoke to the children about Parkinson’s, a condition I was diagnosed with 30 years ago. I want them to understand my symptoms, and not to be worried or anxious if, or when confronted with them.
The Assembly was not a definitive explanation of Parkinson’s, there is extensive information online should you wish to know more. I tried to explain more about how the condition affects me and what the children may observe. They also took part in some activities such as using a wobble board and trying to take coins from a purse with gloves on – they quickly realised such things are tricky.
One in five of the UK population has a disability that limits their daily activities and I feel it is important that the children understand that not all disabilities are immediately obvious.
Many thanks for your understanding.
