Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

A notably rainy half term, but that did not stop us on the sports field or in the classroom.

In terms of outcomes, we are currently receiving results from senior school applications. Indicators suggest another strong year, of the eight entrants to Churcher’s College at 11+ or 13+, all eight have received offers. Likewise, we have 100% application-to-offer rates for RGS, Seaford College, St Catherine’s, Cranleigh and Frensham Heights. From King Edward’s, I note that we already have eight scholarships secured, with further awards coming in from other schools. More news to come – well played, Year 6 and Year 8.

Looking ahead, we have another Open House event on 6th March. Reception to Year 5 will be inviting parents in to look at their book work and to join activities that, in time, lead to outcomes such as the senior school offers noted above. Year 6 will be cracking on with High School Musical that day, and Years 7 and 8 have some hard studying ahead.

This week we also enjoyed our now notable annual fixture, Grandparents’ Afternoon. It was a fantastic turnout and such a lovely opportunity to celebrate learning across generations.

A half term break lies ahead, and we look forward to welcoming pupils back on Tuesday 24th February. On the Monday, staff will be together for training on phonics, literacy and digital technologies.

Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has been another wonderfully busy and productive week in Upper Prep. The week started well with a careers talk from Mrs Kindersley and Mr Lewer, which the children found very interesting. The children have worked incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and should be very proud of their efforts. That said, there is certainly a sense that a well-earned half term break is just around the corner!

Our Year 8 pupils have been preparing thoughtfully for their upcoming Lenten Appeal assembly on Thursday 26th February. Working collaboratively in small groups, they have each selected a charity and created persuasive presentations explaining why their chosen cause should become our school charity for the year. I have been impressed by both the depth of their research and the passion with which they are championing their charities.

The Year 7 children have continued to shine on the sports field. Their recent hockey fixtures against Cranleigh were thoroughly enjoyed, and it has been particularly heartening to see so many of them making the most of the astro at break times. The football matches have been full of energy, teamwork and good humour – and even more so when younger pupils are warmly invited to join in. The sense of camaraderie and friendship across year groups is a real strength of Upper Prep.

Creativity has also been flourishing. All of Upper Prep have submitted imaginative and thoughtful entries to the Rotary Creative Writing Competition, and I have been genuinely impressed by the originality and quality of their work. We certainly have some talented writers at Barrow Hills.

Finally, I had the pleasure of attending King Edward’s School on Wednesday evening to watch their production of Matilda. It was a truly fantastic performance and a joy to see some familiar Barrow Hills faces on stage. George J, Izzy R, Hugo P, Isabel A, Pippa D, Elsa M and Daphne W took on key roles with great confidence, and it was wonderful to see Toby R playing guitar in the band. Congratulations to them all on such a memorable show!

Wishing everyone a restful and happy half term break!

Some dates for your diary:

Monday February 23rd: Staff INSET day
Tuesday February 24th: AI Digital Parent Workshop led by Year 8
Thursday February 26th: Yr 8 Lenten Appeal Assembly
Monday March 2nd: World Book Week

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

As we reach the end of a busy half-term, it has been lovely to reflect on another fun week.

Earlier in the week, Year 4 enjoyed a trip to KESW to watch Matilda Jr. What a treat it was to see theatre in action! The children were thoroughly captivated by the performance, and it was a wonderful opportunity for them to experience the magic of the stage and perhaps even feel inspired for their own future productions.

Sport has, as always, played a big part in the week, with lots of fixtures and activities taking place across the year groups. It has been fantastic to see so many children involved, showing determination, teamwork, and resilience. The week has culminated this afternoon with a cross-country event, where pupils have been pushing themselves, encouraging their friends, and demonstrating great stamina. I look forward to hearing all about how they got on.

As we head into the half-term break, I would like to thank the children for their continued hard work and positivity, and you for your ongoing support. I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned rest and some quality time with family and friends.

We look forward to welcoming the children back refreshed and ready for the next half of term on Tuesday 24th February.

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Grandparents’ Afternoon is always a highlight of our school calendar and this year was no exception. We were delighted to welcome our visitors, including residents from Bramshott Grange Residential Home in Liphook. The children were excited to show off what they’ve been learning to someone who means so much to them. For our grandparents, it was a wonderful chance for them to see our school up close and witness some of their grandchildren’s everyday experiences. Most of all, memories were made during an afternoon which celebrated the special bond between generations.

Earlier in the week, Year 1 took their Science learning to the senior science lab to further investigate different states of matter. The children impressed our Head of Science, Mr Behan, with their knowledge and the experiments prompted some well thought questioning.

Congratulations to Leo (Kindy), Evie (Rec), Hugo (Year 1) and Sophie (Year 2) who were presented with Work of the Week certificates in this morning’s assembly. As we reach half term, we were proud to present the Pre-Prep Playtime Award to Ariella (Year 1). Ariella brings kindness and enthusiasm to every game and activity in our garden, making others feel included. Well done Ariella.

After half term we have an Usborne book sale on Tuesday 24th February in the ballet studio. All Pre-Prep children and their parents are warmly invited to visit the book sale after the school day, while Year 2 can bring in money to spend at the sale in a sealed envelope which they can hand in to their class teacher when they arrive on Tuesday morning.

Have a super half term break. See you on Tuesday 24th February.
Mrs Barnett
