Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

We were greeted by some lovely sunshine to start the Summer Term, made even more enjoyable by our third annual Art Exhibition, which was a stunner. Thank you for your support in coming to celebrate such a breadth of artistic expression. This year, I was particularly impressed by how many children worked purposefully to link knowledge and skills across subjects – for example, translating plant cell structure in science into large-scale painting and printmaking.

We have also started strongly with the Rotary Young Writers’ Competition, achieving 42 commended entries and five section wins. Well done to Isobel, Leonidas, Mathilda, Delilah and Tom, who now progress to the District Finals.

We recently had 15 children taking their ballet exams, gaining high marks across the board, with an unprecedented three candidates receiving a ‘distinction’. Additionally, Hermione in Year 7 became the first Barrow Hills pupil to take a major ballet exam in London. Thank you, as always, to Miss Anna for her support.

Year 8 pupils to be congratulated this week include Charlie, Delilah, Tom and Josh, who bravely and articulately addressed the District Chair of Governors’ Forum last night, sharing their work on digital innovation and inclusion – leaders of the future, dealing impressively with a room full of Surrey grandees.

In this area, we are pleased to be partnering for a second year with Surrey and Royal Holloway universities, who kindly provide pro bono support for our work on digital innovation. Their research team will begin next week, working with Years 6, 7 and 8 over the next half term to further develop the learning tools we are using to support academic progress.

There is also some support for parents via an expert seminar hosted at King Edward’s School, Witley, on 7 May at 6pm: ‘Food, Feelings, and Growing Up’. We will share a full invitation next week.

Do check the diary; we have a great deal ahead, from residential trips to Snowdonia, Sayers Croft and the Costa Brava, to the usual cornucopia of sports days, summer proms and prize giving.

Final word to Arthur in Year 2, who climbed Helvellyn with his older brother Toby (Year 6) over the holidays – impressive grit.

News from Upper Prep

It has been so lovely to welcome the children back to school after their Easter break and hear about all their adventures!

Both Year 7 and Year 8 have exams after half term and lessons in many subjects have been focused on preparing for these by practising skills and completing past papers.  We encourage and support the children in setting their own targets so that they can focus on their next steps and how to get there.  I will also run some revision workshops over the coming weeks so that children can maximise their time at home effectively.

The Year 7 children have begun rehearsals for their Evening of Music and Drama this week and I have been impressed with their energy, musical talent – and comic timing.  It promises to be a very funny evening!

Delilah, Tom, Josh and our IT Captain, Charlie went to Prior’s Field School to address the Chair of Governors’ Forum for the South East on Thursday evening. The theme for the evening was  “AI and Inclusive Excellence”, and the children provided a live demonstration of our AI tools in action, and then answered some questions.  I know Mr Towers and Mr Hinds were so proud of our four Year 8 children who spoke with great enthusiasm, maturity and confidence.

All the Upper Prep children began their ‘Market Day’ project this week.  This involves planning in small groups how they will make and market a product and then sell this to the rest of the school in a special Market Day event.  They have already decided on the names of their groups and allocated the roles of Managing Director, Finance Director, Product Development Manager and Marketing Manager – so watch this space!

Finally a big well done to our sporting champions!  Mateo and James both play for Guildford City Hockey club and their team won the National championships in Nottingham over the Easter break.  Henry C took part in a swimming gala with his team, Guildford City, and achieved two personal bests.  Well done boys!

Some dates for your diary:
Tuesday April 28th at 4.45pm: Meeting re: Costa Brava trip to Barcelona – Mr Smith and Mr Unwin will tell you all you need to know about this trip!
Friday May 1st: Celebration of 75 years of Barrow Hills School.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

Welcome back to the final, and busiest term of the school year – the much anticipated Summer Term. It has been fun to hear about the different adventures, day trips, discoveries and Easter Egg Hunts the children enjoyed over the three week break, and wonderful to see them enjoying the beautiful grounds, soaking up some much needed Vitamin D!

We hit the ground running at the start of the week with a Staff Inset, much of which was spent readying the Chapel for the annual Spring Art Exhibition. Work continued tirelessly over the next couple of days, ready for the grand opening on Wednesday afternoon. I think you will all agree that it was a triumph, with a superb range of artistic expression on show.  I do hope you were able to make the most of the opportunity to stroll through our glorious Chapel, enjoying the various pieces.  Thank you to Mrs Waller for inspiring such creativity in the children.

Looking forward to the Year 6 Residential Trip to Snowdonia, I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs Burnett and the team for Tuesday’s Information Evening and to those parents who were able to attend. Please do feel free to speak with your child’s form teachers if you have any questions or concerns.

We saw a return to cricket training this week. There’s something very evocative about the sound of wood on willow which instantly brings to mind the idyllic, long days of summer, and it is credit to the sports department that we find many Old Barrow Hillians continue to enjoy cricket through senior school and beyond.

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Welcome back! We hope you’ve all had a wonderful break and are ready for an exciting summer term. With the arrival of the spring sunshine too, the children have been making the most of our outdoor space across the curriculum throughout this week; exploring nature, taking part in active lessons, and developing their curiosity in the fresh air.

This term also brings a range of new and engaging topics, giving our children opportunities to discover new interests and build on their skills in creative and meaningful ways.

This week we have been showcasing the children’s creativity in our Spring Art Exhibition. Their hard work and imagination has been proudly displayed in the chapel this week and it’s been fantastic to see the progression in the children’s skills and use of different mediums as they progress up through the school.

Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Barnett

We’re thrilled to invite little ones into our Nursery and Forest School for a our weekly toddler class – Tree Tots @ Barrow Hills!

Tree Tots welcomes girls and boys aged 6 months – 3 years for a magical hour of play. Babies can relax in our baby sensory corner as toddlers take on themed activity stations – we’ll then all come together for songs, games and story time.

The classes will meet every Friday at 9am during term-time – the first two classes will be free to attend, (thereafter £5 per child), and include a hot drink and snack for both carers and their little ones!

Please do bring along any children and spread the word with friends – tickets must be booked in advance, through the Happity website.
