Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

Thank you very much for your donations to our Harvest appeal. It is such a good thing for the children to understand how we can support our local food bank. We also enjoyed some performances and readings from children across Pre-Prep and Prep.

During the week, Year 6 exhibited impeccable behaviour at Legoland while undertaking Design and Technology workshops, and we enjoyed fixtures across the year groups in football, hockey, and netball. Next week brings orchestra days, history trips, and science trips as we move towards half-term.

A final shout-out to our recent solo ‘musicians of the week’ for some really brave and notable performances. Today, we were treated to some ABBA from Cassie on the cornet, and recent weeks have seen some solid work from Cara on the piano and Arlo in song.

Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

Despite some gloomy weather, the children in Upper Prep have remained in high spirits this week.

Some of our girls left very early on Wednesday morning to participate in the hockey IAPS in Oxford. I know Mrs Burnett was very proud of your resilience and hard work – well done!

It was a delight to watch our Harvest Festival on Thursday. This was such a joyful celebration and I was very pleased to see Hermione and Elliott, and Emily and Charlie taking the lead in this service. You read clearly and with great confidence. Thank you also to those who donated so generously to our harvest collection. This will be given to those families in need via local food banks.

Our STEM Captain, Charles, enjoyed a trip to Legoland with the Year 6 children on Thursday. Thank you Charles for all the support and help you gave Mr Behan and the staff who went on this trip.

Finally here are some dates for your diary:

News from Prep

It has been such a busy week!! Madame Early’s Monday assembly celebrated Black History Month, and the children learned about Mary Seacole, a pioneering nurse in the Crimean War, who bravely helped wounded servicemen at a time when discrimination against minorities was rife.

On Wednesday, Year 3 spent the morning with an (almost real life!) Viking! It was a thoroughly engaging experience where they discovered some fascinating facts about armour, jewellery and clothing in the Viking Age.

Thursday saw a very excited Year 6 head to Legoland. In their workshops, the children collaborated in small groups to design and build a variety of Lego models, and then used a coding programme, to bring them to life! They then put their learning about velocity, acceleration and speed into practice as they proved just how fearless they are, trying out the rides and rollercoasters. Thank you to Mr Behan for organising one of the most fun school trips imaginable!

Thursday was also a time for thoughts of the wider community at our Harvest Assembly. Thank you so much to all the parents for your very generous Harvest Festival donations. Staff from the Godalming Community Store were, once again, overwhelmed with the Barrow Hills bounty.

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 girls who travelled to Dorset today for the IAPS Hockey Tournament – Mrs Burnett and Mrs Clarke were delighted with how well you performed and represented the school.

As we head into the final week of the half term, a quick reminder that tickets for the annual Barrow Hills firework display on Friday 13th November can be purchased using a QR code (see posters for details), or at the Friday morning Bacon Butties stall. As an incentive to buy early, the cost of these is £6 per person if purchased before half term, rising to £9 per person after half term.

I hope many of you will be able to attend next Wednesday’s “Life at the Top” evening with our Head of Upper Prep, Mrs Mason, starting at 6pm in the Chapel, with refreshments from 5:45pm. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Year 7 and 8 experience at Barrow Hills, both from the perspective of staff, and returning pupils.

Wishing you all a restful weekend.
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Yesterday, we came together for a very special Harvest Festival Assembly, reflecting on the importance of gratitude, generosity and looking after one another. We were incredibly proud of all of our performers, who sang, spoke and performed with such confidence and enthusiasm. A particularly special mention must go to our youngest singers in Kindy and Reception, many of whom were performing in front of an audience for the very first time. They should be incredibly proud of themselves. Their beautiful singing brought a real sense of joy to our celebration and was a lovely reminder of just how much our children can achieve when they are given the opportunity to shine. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our families for their incredibly generous donations to our Harvest appeal, supporting Godalming Community Store. Your kindness and generosity will make a real difference to those who need a little extra support.

Congratulations to Freddie (Year 1) and Evie (Year 2) who each received Work of the Week certificates in assembly this morning. We also had our very first Bronze Awards of the school year to present. Well done to Isla, Oliver, Toto and Alice in Year 1 and to Ariella and Alex in Year 2.

On Monday, Year 2 head off on their first trip of the year to the Lookout Discovery Centre as part of their Science topics this term on Electricity and Magnets and Forces. The children need a small backpack in which to carry their school packed lunch along with a full water bottle and raincoat.

Next Friday, 16th October, is our Open Classroom event. Parents are warmly invited to their child’s classroom from 2:30pm if your child is in Kindy or Reception, and from 2:45pm if your child is in Year 1 and Year 2. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep
