In Forest School, we have been learning about British garden birds in anticipation of the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch and we are looking forward to taking part at the end of the month.
We looked at the basic anatomy of a bird and how they differ from humans. We learnt about the two different types of feather a bird has. Waterproof contour feathers are found on top of the bird and used for flight and balance. The fluffy down feathers that lie close to the bird’s body keep it warm. The children were able to identify five different British garden birds, including the robin, which is Britain’s national bird.
The Forest School sessions were finished off with a very silly game where the children had to complete the actions of different types of bird; balance like a flamingo, or swoop like a seagull! Everyone enjoyed this one!
With the cold icy mornings last week, Nursery children were also able to make some beautiful hanging ice sculptures using things collected from the forest floor. They are very easy to make and look stunning; you should try making them at home using different shaped vessels.
