Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

Year 7 and 8 Market Day provided an opportunity for our budding entrepreneurs to develop products and bring them to parents and peers. They did exceptionally well, despite the weather, raising £660 for the charity Halow Project.

The Upper Prep children are currently en route to a week of adventurous activities in Spain, having boarded overnight at King Edward’s to facilitate a 4am arrival at Gatwick. Everything has gone smoothly so far, and a special mention must go to Mr Mullins and Mr Hinds for the early hours bus run.  I was surprised to find Mr Hinds at his desk when I arrived at 7.30am; having eschewed bed, he had returned to work and was already cracking on with reports. Staff who go the extra mile, alongside children full of curiosity and kindness, are what make this school so special.

Elsewhere, Reception enjoyed a wonderful visit to the Arundel Wetland Centre, bringing their learning to life through hands-on exploration of the natural world. Midweek, Year 7 also treated family and friends to an excellent Evening of Music and Drama, showcasing both their talent and growing confidence on stage.

As well as being a magical place, we are increasingly a school that delivers academically, and I would encourage parents to shout loudly about this. Warmth, kindness, and strong academic outcomes are not competing priorities; they are mutually reinforcing strengths of a great school.

We continue to use the ISEB examination board in Year 8. It is low risk (as it does not affect senior school places) and high reward in terms of cognitive development and preparation for GCSEs. Pupils sat papers in Maths, English, Combined Science, French, Geography, and History. Overall, 56% achieved grades A* or A, while 93% achieved grades A*, A, or B. This represents a slight improvement on recent, and strong, years.

The other headline is whole-school attainment. We use standardised, externally marked assessments to complement our teachers’ judgements throughout the year. Nationally, 62% of pupils achieve scores that are “in line with” or “above” expectations in English and Maths combined. At Barrow Hills, our combined figure stands at 85%, a testament to the strength of teaching and learning across the school and the significant value added to our children’s progress in these core subjects.

Have a great weekend.
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

As we speed towards the end of term the Upper Prep children have thrown themselves into all activities with their usual energy and enthusiasm.

The Year 7 children entertained the school and their parents on Tuesday with a fantastic Evening of Music and Drama. Set in a radio studio, the children performed funny scenes and sketches and musical numbers. I was so proud of them all – and very impressed with the musical talent in the class.  Hopefully you will hear them perform at assembly soon!

All the children in Year 7 and Year 8 have been developing their entrepreneurial skills this term. In groups, they have planned and created their own products to sell at a Market Day over the past term. Each group assigned roles and responsibilities and presented their slides in a special assembly ready for Market Day itself on Thursday which was a huge success! Thank you to all parents for their support.

All of Upper Prep enjoyed a fantastic interactive Spanish lesson in preparation for their Costa Brava trip – thank you to Mrs Mowlam for planning and delivering this and also to Mateo, for assisting!

Finally, Year 8 received their 13+CE results on Thursday and celebrated with a special lunch. I know I speak for all the Upper Prep teachers when I say we are so very proud of all the Year 8 children. They have put so much effort and hard work into their revision and they thoroughly deserve their superb results!

The Upper Prep children and I, plus Mr Smith and Mr Unwin, are off to the Costa Brava in the early hours of Friday morning so I look forward to sharing all our news next week.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

With just a few more weeks left of term, the days certainly seem to be flying by.

Yesterday, MTech presented a roof raising assembly to the whole school. MTech is one of our external activities, running after school every Thursday, giving children the opportunity to learn about music composition in a hands-on and fun environment.

Yesterday also saw the ever popular Year 7 and 8 Market Day. Sadly, the weather meant we had a change of venue, however the hall was abuzz with excitement as the older children showed their entrepreneurial spirit, and the Prep children had the chance to browse the various stalls, with the autonomy to make their own decisions as to where they spent their money!

The sun looks to be making a reappearance this weekend, so I wish you all a pleasant couple of days.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Reception had a wonderful day on their trip to Arundel Wetland Centre, even though the weather was very wet. Dressed in waterproofs and wellies, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Warner, Mrs Wilson  and the children enjoyed exploring the wetlands and spotting lots of different birds. They had great fun pond dipping and searching for minibeasts, discovering fascinating creatures living in the water. Despite the rain, the children loved walking along the boardwalks and taking in the beautiful surroundings. The trip provided many exciting opportunities for hands-on learning and helped the children to develop a greater understanding of the natural world. Everyone returned to school with happy memories and lots of stories to tell about their soggy but enjoyable adventure.

On Tuesday afternoon we welcomed our new Reception intake, including our Kindy children, to their first Stay and Play session with Mrs Rogers and Mrs Warner. We were all so impressed with how well all of the children settled into their new surroundings and interacted with many new faces. They enjoyed exploring their new classroom and listening to a story with Mrs Rogers. We’re already looking forward to next week’s session.

Transition activities were in fact evident across Pre-Prep at different times this week. Reception spent Wednesday afternoon in their new Year 1 classroom with Mrs Harris and Mrs Mullins, and designed their own hot air balloons which will be displayed when they start in September. Meanwhile, Year 2 have been getting used to changing before Games in preparation for Year 3 when they don’t arrive at school in sports kit any more. Building lots of small transition activities into the final few weeks of the summer term really helps the children to build confidence and become familiar with their new classrooms and teachers ahead of September.

Year 1 carried out their Science lesson with Mr Behan and Mrs Harris in the science Lab this week. The children had been learning about the human body and enjoyed exploring the full size skeleton and sharing facts about organs including the lungs when I had lunch with them later.

Well done to Freddie (Kindy), Freddie (Rec), Leo (Year 1) and Sammy (Year 2) who all received Work of the Week certificates at assembly this morning. Congratulations too to Lockie, Evie and Josh (Reception) who achieved their Gold Awards and to Leo (Year 1), Alexander, Austin, India and Kit (Year 2) who were awarded their Platinum Awards. A wonderful achievement. A very special mention goes to Rocco (Year 2) who achieved the Diamond Award – a first for a child in Pre-Prep. Super efforts from all of you.

Tree Tots welcomes girls and boys aged 6 months – 3 years for a magical hour of play. Babies can relax in our baby sensory corner as toddlers take on themed activity stations – we’ll then all come together for songs, games and story time.

The classes will meet every Friday at 9am during term-time – the first two classes will be free to attend, (thereafter £5 per child), and include a hot drink and snack for both carers and their little ones!

Please do bring along any children and spread the word with friends – tickets must be booked in advance, through the Happity website.
