Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

After a few decades’ absence, we are delighted to announce that a boarding option is returning for Barrow Hills Upper Prep children. From this September, our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils will be able to access flexi-boarding in the lovely Queen Mary House at King Edward’s School, just up the road. Full details will follow, including information about the shuttle bus, evening activities, and dates for upcoming free taster sessions.

Our visit from 100 (!) teachers from the Korean Department of Education was a great success. Year 7, who acted as tour guides, along with all Barrow Hills children, had the chance to shine as we opened our classrooms to our overseas colleagues. Meanwhile, our Year 8’s led demonstration workshops for the Korean teachers, showcasing how they use our safe Bridewell AI to develop critical thinking and deepen knowledge. I was incredibly proud – not just of the knowledge these pupils have acquired, but also of their quietly confident social and presentation skills.

Year 8 will be bringing their AI “world tour” to you, the parents, at an event on Tuesday 24th February. Please join us for an AI and digital workshop, with coffee after drop-off, where our pupils and staff will share live technology in action and demonstrate the arc of learning development at Barrow Hills for parents with an interest in digital learning.

At the lower end of the school, it was lovely to see the Reception class applying their curriculum learning and practical skills through a charity penguin craft sale for parents today. Funds raised will sponsor an actual penguin. We also welcomed a visiting historian this week, who provided an engaging WWII workshop for Year 4. In addition, we are pleased to share news of a number of our dancers passing recent ballet exams – congratulations, all of you! Barely stopping for breath, we have with more results to come across the spring term.

What a week – the mid week deluge has not stopped us moving forwards!

Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

Barrow Hills played host to some visitors from Korea on Monday when fifty Korean teachers came to our school to find out about the English education system.  The children in Year 8 went up to King Edward’s school with Mr Towers to show some Korean teachers how they use our Bridewell AI to benefit their learning, and I know he was very proud of the way they engaged with the adults around them.  Year 7 acted as tour guides for our visitors and showed them around Barrow Hills, telling them all about our school, sometimes with the aid of an interpreter, sometimes not!  I was so impressed with the mature way the Year 7 children interacted with our guests.

Some of our Year 8 children had scholarship interviews at King Edward’s school this week as they have applied for academic, sport, art and drama scholarships.  Delilah is also through to the second stage of her Performing Arts scholarship interview at Charterhouse.  I have been so pleased to see the children working so diligently towards these assessments and I thank all staff for their help and support in preparing them. We wish everyone well!

Finally, huge congratulations to Hermione and James, both Year 7, who successfully made it into the Surrey County Cross Country Team after competing against many other hopeful runners in Reigate last Saturday!  This is a fantastic achievement. Well done Hermione and James!

Have a lovely weekend everyone – I’m hoping for some drier weather!

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

It has been another busy and exciting week here at Barrow Hills, filled with enriching experiences and wonderful examples of our pupils representing the school so positively.

Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed a visit from the History Man, who delivered an immersive and engaging World War II workshop. The children were captivated by the artefacts, stories, and role-play activities, which brought their learning vividly to life and deepened their understanding of this important period in history.

Our programme of after-school clubs is now fully underway, offering a wide variety of opportunities for the children to explore new interests, develop skills, and enjoy time with friends beyond the classroom. It has been lovely to see such strong enthusiasm and participation across all year groups.

On Monday, we were delighted to welcome a group of visitors from Korea to the school. Our pupils were exceptional ambassadors, greeting our guests with confidence, kindness, and impeccable manners. This was echoed again today during our Open Morning, where prospective families were able to experience first-hand the warmth, respect, and sense of community that defines Barrow Hills. We are always so proud of how our children conduct themselves on these occasions.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I wish you all a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

You may have been aware that this week hosted Penguin Awareness Day on Tuesday and Reception class really impressed the rest of Pre-Prep with their knowledge of penguins which they’ve been learning all about since the beginning of term. After two weeks of creating penguin themed crafts, Reception welcomed their parents this afternoon to come in and purchase these in order to raise money towards sponsoring a real penguin! The children are really excited about hearing how their sponsored penguin is doing and helping to support both the penguin and its environment.

What a particularly wet week it has been in our garden this week but that didn’t dampen our spirits or our enjoyment, it simply altered the landscape for us and the children spent all play times splashing in puddles, creating streams or making mini dams. The stream that Year 1 managed to create at the bottom of the garden, where they were taking turns to collect bucket fulls of water from giant puddles at the top of the garden was wonderful to watch, particularly in terms of creativity and teamwork!

Congratulations to Zoe (Kindy), Josh (Rec), Valo (Year 1) and Kit (Year 2) who each received Work of the Week certificates this morning in assembly. Some fantastic enthusiasm has been shown in phonics this week, wonderfully detailed 3D models in Art and great care and accuracy over maths work. Well done everyone. Alex and Valo (Year 1) achieved their Silver Awards this morning for their house point collection to date.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.
Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep

Music Lesson Timetables

Music lesson timetables are published every Friday via the School Portal. While our music teachers endeavour to attend on their designated days, there may be occasions when adjustments are necessary. We kindly ask parents to check the published timetables each week to ensure that students bring their instrument and music to school on the correct day.

Tree Tots at Barrow Hills

From February we’re thrilled to invite little ones to a new baby & toddler class – Tree Tots @ Barrow Hills!
Tree Tots welcomes girls and boys aged 6 months – 3 years for a magical hour of play. Babies can relax in our baby sensory corner as toddlers take on themed activity stations – we’ll then all come together for songs, games and story time.
The classes will meet every Wednesday at 9am during term-time – the first two classes will be free to attend, or £5 thereafter, and include a hot drink and snack for both carers and their little ones!
Please do bring along any children and spread the word with friends – tickets must be booked in advance, through the Happity website

Barrow Hills Parents’ Association

Bacon Butties were a welcome treat this morning, and helped raised £200. The Bacon Butty stall runs every single Friday, serving a selection of delicious breakfast treats and hot drinks, and is a fabulous meeting point for everyone to catch up at the end of the school week.

Today we raised £145 in second hand uniform sales and £32 in bobble hat sales!

Thanks to our amazing team and the community for your support!
