Orchestral Day

29th January 2016

On Friday 29th January some of our talented musicians and music scholars were delighted to be invited to King Edward’s Witley for a joint orchestral day in the Countess of Munster Music Suite. We all started rehearsals at 9am and had a fantastic time being coached Mr Sliwka, Director of Music at King Edwards, and Mr Wardell. We particularly enjoyed our time with the percussion teacher, Mr Whittaker, who put us through our paces with samba! We rehearsed all day and the final concert at 3 pm was a real success.

The joint orchestra made up of pupils from King Edward’s and Barrow Hills plus a few adult musicians played March from Scipio by Handel and Viva la vida by Coldplay. This was followed by the String Ensemble playing Let it go from Frozen and Dolce Concerto Poloni by Telemann and the wind band strutting their stuff with Also sprach Zarathustra by Strauss and Thriller by Michael Jackson.

We finished off with two solos by two Sixth Form pupils, Fiyi Martins (piano) and James Wood (voice), and Barrow Hills School solos by Alice-Serenade by Scubert (cello), Julien – German Dance by Haydn (French horn), Eleanor – Circus Rag (flute). In addition to the three soloists, Nicholas (trumpet), Monty (trombone), Annabel B (clarinet), Annabel C(flute), Anna (violin) and Harry (percussion) all played beautifully.
