Just like our bodies learn how to recognise a pathogen that has invaded our body, last week the boys in year 8 were fortunate enough to learn about the study of immunology in a visit from Dr.Thomson.
Following an introduction into what immunology is, Dr.Thomson went on to explain in detail the immune system, its complexities in protection against foreign bodies, and even from our own cells (e.g. cancer).
From innate to acquired immunity, information was presented on a variety of areas inclusive of: specialisation of leukocytes; the lymphatic system; allergies; and therapeutics (vaccination, immunotherapy and transplantation).
The children discussed in detail the nuances of Psychoneuroimmunology (the relationship between mental health and the immune system), how chronic stress can affect physical wellbeing via the release of cortisol, and the benefits of regular physical activity in strengthening our immune system.
Following this, Dr.Thomson presented ideas regarding the future of wireless monitoring and developments in the world of 3D printing, specifically of pharmaceutical drugs! Children learned about the term ‘vital signs’ and discussed the benefits of new medical technologies to both the patient and the National Health Service.
