Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day PosterHot stuff this week, with highlights including Year 2 and Year 3 visiting a fruit farm, and a fantastic Pre-Prep Summer Celebration and a reflective assembly from Year 6 today.

Year 8 have been hard at work designing and constructing functional Remotely Operated Vehicles. This project has provided an excellent practical application of STEM learning, challenging the children to master wire soldering, calculate buoyancy, and build structural frames from scratch. These submarines and other underwater vehicles will be launched and put through their paces in the swimming pool next week.

Our children have also been making great strides, with both LAMDA examinations and ballet examinations taking place. I am sure there will be much success to celebrate. In the most recent round of LAMDA exams all children gained distinctions, with 7 children scoring over 90% and Delilah smashing it at 94%.

We moved Sports Day into the reserve slot next Wednesday 1st July and look forward to that, along with a series of other events culminating in Prize Giving on Friday.

Looking ahead to the next academic year, we are fortunate once again to have a very stable and loyal staff body powering our engines. There are, however, a few thanks to give.

Mr O’Kelly, our Year 4 teacher, will be leaving after six years of service to complete a Master’s degree. We are delighted to welcome Ms Sasha Wigley, a highly experienced teacher, to join our team. Mr Pretorius, Head of Maths, is also moving on after three years at the school, returning to South Africa with his family. Mrs Burge, an experienced Head of Maths, has been appointed to succeed him.

Mrs Platt, one of our Teaching Assistants, is retiring after 25 years of dedicated service to the school. She will be replaced by Mrs Knight, an experienced Teaching Assistant and qualified teacher. We also bid farewell to Karen Herrington from the Accounts Department, who is retiring after 21 years of service.

We are immensely grateful for the contribution each of these colleagues has made and for the positive impact they have had on our pupils and the wider school community. We wish them every happiness and success in the future.

This will be the final newsletter of the academic year. We will, however, be sending out some celebratory film footage next week to capture the many special moments and achievements of the year. Thank you for your support.

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has been a hot and action packed week in Upper Prep. Despite the 35 degree heat, the children in Year 7 and Year 8 have tackled all activities with their usual energy and enthusiasm.

Mr Smith, Mr Unwin and I were delighted with the wonderful way the children behaved on our Costa Brava trip – and we were proud to receive so many compliments about the Barrow Hills children from the staff at the hotel where we stayed and also from the water sports instructors who praised the children’s listening skills and their sense of fun!  You can read a much more detailed description of our trip elsewhere in the article section of the bulletin.

Year 8 have continued to enjoy their Post CE Programme of events and activities.  They have participated in ‘The Drop’, a fun Casino Morning and a day designing and building their own submarines, these will be tested in the pool later!  Last Friday saw Year 8 perform a ‘Play in a Day’ to their families on the outdoor stage.  This was a lovely event and I was so impressed that the children learnt so many lines in just one day!

Year 7 children have received their exam marks this week and have spent some time setting targets and looking at their next steps.  Well done Year 7, we are proud of the effort you have put into this academic year and the results you have achieved.

Finally, on behalf of all the Upper Prep teachers, I would like to thank all of the parents for your support.  We cannot do our job without you so thank you very much for your help and kind words throughout the year!

Year 7, we look forward to seeing you in September as you move to the very top of the school and Year 8, it has been a pleasure to know you all.  We wish you every possible success on the next step of your school journey.

Dates for your diary
Monday June 29th: 8.35am Year 8 Final Assembly, all parents welcome.
Wednesday July 1st: Sports Day
Thursday July 2nd: 8.35am  Leavers’ Service in the chapel. All parents welcome.

Have a wonderful summer,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep & the Upper Prep Staff

News from Prep

Well, we made it to the final newsletter of the school year! I would like to commend the children for the adaptability and positive attitude they have displayed this week, in the face of truly scorching temperatures and last minute changes to their schedules. It has been uncomfortable, we have all been a little more tired than usual, but they have shown some real resilience and made the staff very proud. Well done!

On Monday, Year 3 children had a glorious trip to a local Strawberry Farm. They picked seasonal fruit (strawberries, raspberries and blueberries), enjoyed tractor rides, a picnic in the shade of the trees, and all in all thoroughly enjoyed a quintessential British summer’s day. They returned to Barrow Hills with several punnets of fresh fruit which I know they couldn’t wait to devour. What a lovely learning experience!

Whilst all the children’s academic examinations are now complete for the school year, that is not the case for our extra curricular activities. Yesterday, a number of children took LAMDA exams in Speaking and Verse, Acting Solos and Duologues, and Musical Theatre. Tomorrow, we have Ballet Exams taking place. I know how hard all the children work with these additional enrichment pursuits, and I hope they get the good results they so richly deserve.

This week’s cancelled matches meant some quick thinking by the Sports Department, who then pulled off some of the most fun activities we’ve ever seen! From sprinkler splashes to larks in the swimming pool, I know many happy memories will have been made. Thank you to all the parents for being so supportive with the difficult decision to postpone Sports Day to next Wednesday. The temperatures today were simply too high, and the well being of the children remains paramount when it comes to such things.

This morning Year 6 gave a poignant assembly as they move to the top of the school, and, in some cases, on to pastures new. For those saying goodbye, I wish you all the very best and hope you hold tight to the values and experiences Barrow Hills has given you.

As another wonderful school year draws to a close, we’ll simply have to hold on to the memories until September.

Have a wonderful summer,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

What a wonderful day our Year 2 children had on Monday when they visited Tuesley Farm! They thoroughly enjoyed exploring the farm and were delighted by the bountiful crop of fresh fruit ready for picking. Armed with baskets and plenty of enthusiasm, they carefully harvested juicy strawberries, delicious raspberries and sweet blueberries, learning about how these fruits are grown and the importance of farming and seasonal produce. After all their hard work the children were treated to a well-deserved ice cream, which was enjoyed in the shade and proved to be the perfect end to a fantastic day.

As the warmer weather really spiked this week, we have been keeping cool and comfortable during the school day in any way we could. The children have enjoyed spending time in the air-conditioned library, sharing books and stories with children from other year groups. We have also taken advantage of extra swimming opportunities and made good use of our woodland area, where the shade has provided a welcome escape from the heat while allowing for plenty of outdoor learning and exploration.

Reception enjoyed their Science Lab session on Tuesday with Mr Behan where they were making their own finger prints and then examining them under the microscope after their recent visit from the police. They also analysed some cheek samples too.

Yesterday morning was our Pre-Prep Summer Celebration in which we celebrated the end of a very successful year. The children from Nursery to Year 2 proudly performed to their families in a packed Chapel as it was simply too warm outdoors, and were presented with a special book by Mr Towers. The celebration was rounded off by Year 2 who performed their maypole dancing to their parents in front of the school building. Very impressive, girls and boys!

Have a wonderful summer,
Mrs Barnett
